NDC won 2012 elections out of sympathy for weeping with Mahama – Allotey Jacobs

Social Commentator, Allotey Jacobs says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) only won in 2012 because Ghanaians were sympathetic to Mahama because of the sudden demise of John Evans Atta Mills.

His comment comes on the back of claims that the NDC won 2012 elections without the support of the founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings.

But according to him, the truth then was that it was the first time Ghana had lost its sitting President and the shock made Ghanaians more sympathetic with John Dramani Mahama hence voting for him to become the President of the country.

Allotey Jacobs was speaking on Accra-based Asempa FM in an interview which was monitored by BritishAccra.com

He said “you can’t build the party without the founder. As you see Rawlings like that, he has influence in the party very well. I came here to tell my party that we will lose most of our seat in the Central Region if care is not taken but they tagged me as an NDC and true to my word, we lost most of our seats”.

When the host pushed him saying without Rawlings’ help the NDC won in 2012 he said “the 2012 elections was out of sympath. Yes it’s a fact that…a young man as a Vice President who doesn’t know anything then all of a sudden he hears his boss is dead. It was a surprise to him, he wept. All these things help and it helped. People had sympathy for him. The reality dawned on us in 2016. So it is important to learn your lessons so that you start to build the party”.
